FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
To: Leaders in Horse Racing
Subject: Action Needed - Contact Senator Feinstein
Senate Bill 474 could eliminate the opportunity for horse racing to capitalize on the use of the Internet. The American Horse Council and others have been working on getting an exemption for horse racing.
I met with Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) a few weeks ago and explained that racing needs to keep open the opportunity of using the Internet. Her office seems willing to propose language which would allow Internet wagering if it was legal in both the sending and receiving state. This would at least give us the important option of eventually being able to use this important technology. I think we could, in time, get Internet and telephone wagering legislated in California. Not everyone agrees, but I think such a move would expand our markets and result in greater fan interest and net revenue gains for all segments of our business.
What we need to do right now is contact Senator Feinstein and let her know that this issue is of prime importance to the horse racing industry. She is on our side, but may not fully understand the depth of support that there is for a horse racing exemption.
