John C. Harris, President and Chairman of the Board
John has been
involved in the Agribusiness and Thoroughbred business all of his life. Harris Ranch has
been in continual family operation since the turn of the century and is now one of the
largest Agribusiness in the nation.
In addition to the
various Harris Ranch Companies cattle and agribusiness operations, the Harris Farms Horse
Division ranks as one of the country's leading racing stables and is one of the
thoroughbred industry's most influential owners/breeder operations.
Harris has bred
and raced numerous outstanding horses including 1994 Cal-Bred Horse of the Year, Soviet
Problem, a filly who came within inches of winning the '94 Breeders' Cup Sprint.
Harris has served
five terms as President of the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association and is
currently serving on the Executive Committee as past President. John also is a
member of both the Jockey Club, California Horse Racing Board and the Breeders' Cup Board of Directors. John and his wife
Carole live at the River Ranch in Sanger California.
Debbie Correia, Administrative Assistant to the Chairman
A California native, Debbie was the chief accountant at the horse division from 1990-94. Prior to that she had worked in several responsible positions in the livestock industry. Since 1994, Debbie has been the Administrative Assistant to the Chairman/CEO of Harris Farms, John. C. Harris. She is depended upon for a large variety of assignments and is a very valuable part of the team. Although a long time horse enthusiast, she was not exposed to thoroughbred racing until coming to Harris Farms where she has quickly become an ace handicapper.
David McGlothlin, General Manager Horse Division
A native of Seattle, Washington, David has in excess of 25 years experience with horses. Beginning with his first show horse in the early 1970's, David graduated with his Bachelor of Science from Colorado State University, two years later he earned his Masters of Science in Reproductive Physiology from that same institution. Upon earning his graduate school degree, David became manager of the Magic Valley Stallion Station in Idaho. In 1981 David arrived at Harris Farms as Manager of the Horse Division. During his tenure, the Harris Farms Horse Division has nearly tripled in physical size from 160 acres to over 450 acres. Additionally, the equine population of the Horse Divisions has quadrupled to its present number of over 400 horses.
Under the tutelage of David, the Harris Farms breeding, racing and boarding operation has flourished. The farm has produced in excess of 50 stakes horses, campaigning throughout California and nationally. David (wife Sandy, daughter Lacy-23 and son Christopher-14) is dedicated to the California thoroughbred industry and has served as an adjunct faculty member at West Hills College in Coalinga. At West Hills, David has taught courses in Equine Science for future industry employees and students of the equine industry.
Dr. Jeanne Bowers-Resident Veterinarian
Since 1967 as an avid student of the thoroughbred pedigree, who
was inspired by Proud Clarion winning the Kentucky Derby, Dr. Bowers has pursed a career
in the equine industry. Dr. Bowers earned her degrees from the University of California at
Davis, in both Animal Science and Equine Medicine. While a senior in the UC Davis
Veterinary school Dr. Bowers won the Lloyds of London Bursary for accomplishments in
Equine medicine.
Dr. Bowers, while a student, served under the watchful eye of prominent reproductive specialist Dr. Irwin Liu on various research studies pertaining to infertility in broodmares and stallions. Dr. Bowers later returned to UCD, from private practice, as the first woman to be a Resident in the Department of Equine Reproduction. Upon completing this residency Dr. Bowers became a staff member of the Ford-Murphy Veterinary Association. This veterinarian firm and Dr. Bowers have been serving the Harris Farms Horse Division for over six years. She became a full time staff member, as resident veterinarian, of the Harris Farms Horse Division, on October 1, 1997. Dr. Bowers and her husband Mike Lepore and step-son Anthony reside in Clovis, CA.
Per Antonsen-Trainer
A native of Denmark, Per started his training career at George Pope's El
Peco Ranch in Madera. In 1981, Per became farm trainer for Harris Farms Horse Division.
With his qualified staff of exercise riders and grooms, Per has been responsible for the
early development and the rehabilitation of several hundred quality runners including:
Champions SOVIET PROBLEM, WORK THE CROWD,
SUPER HIGH
and dual Breeders' Cup Classic winner TIZNOW
among many
others. Per and his staff begin the early racetrack preparation of young racehorses, as
well as the intensive hands on care needed for rest and mending of the thoroughbred
athlete. Per and his wife, Deanna and their 3 children live on the farm.
Raul Rosas - Stallion Manager
An invaluable employee of the Harris Farms Horse Division since 1983,
Raul has worked his way up from a general laborer to stallion manager. Raul is responsible
for the care and well being of the many stallions standing at the Harris Farms. Raul is
available, by appointment, for clients and prospective clients to view the Harris Farms
stallions.
Kristina Henson
Kristina Henson
has been involved with horses for 20 years. She has shown in several disciplines
including western, hunt seat, dressage, and eventing. In 2000 she graduated from
Brigham Young University with a Bachelors degree in veterinary technology. She
moved from Utah to California to work at Fresno State University as an assistant
coach for their equestrian team and as an instructor in the animal science
department. She recently started at Harris Farms as a veterinary technician and
coordinator of our herd health program. She and her husband, Chris, live on the
farm.
