Offering A Tranquil Setting To Raise World-Class Racehorses
The victory by Thor’s Echo in the 2006 TVG Breeders’ Cup Sprint marked another milestone for Harris Farms Inc., as he joined Tiznow to become the second Breeders’ Cup and Eclipse champion to be foaled and raised by the longtime California nursery. It was an important moment for Harris Farms, as it gave the farm the designation of having raised the only two California-bred Breeders’ Cup champions.
As this year’s Breeders’ Cup approaches, Harris Farms connected horses look to be major contenders once again. The brilliant and undefeated Nashoba’s Key, winner of the grade I Vanity Invitational Handicap, was foaled at Harris and raised at our River Ranch property. Greg’s Gold, foaled and raised on our main farm captured this year’s grade II Pat O’Brien Handicap at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, stamping himself as a serious player in the sprint division.
This high level of success on the racetrack and in the breeding shed continues to be the goal at Harris Farms, which has accounted for 22 California divisional champions, 17 Cal Cup champions, and five Horse of the Year honors for the farm and its clients. Thoroughbred stars who trace their roots to Harris Farms include Soviet Problem, Work the Crowd, Super High, Continental Red, Alphabet Kisses, and Eclipse Horse of the Year and only dual winner of the Breeders’ Cup Classic, Tiznow. Current stable stars include: homebred graded stakes winner Lucky J.H., by Cee’s Tizzy; Now Victory, winner of back-to-back Joseph T. Grace Handicaps; and Spot the Diplomat, a multiple stakes winner at two.
The Harris Farms horse division dates back over 40 years to the vision of John Harris and his father Jack, both cattle ranchers, farmers and horsemen who wanted to devote part of their operation to the breeding, raising and training of Thoroughbred racehorses. The horse division represents just one area of the larger Harris Ranch operation, which also operates California’s largest cattle feed yard, as well as thousands of acres planted in almonds, vegetables and citrus.
The acclaimed Harris Ranch Restaurant and beautifully appointed Harris Ranch Inn provide a welcome oasis to weary travelers along I-5, and also serves as a gathering place for important political, social and charitable events attracting a wide audience. Harris Farms is not just a Thoroughbred nursery, it is a California institution, providing thousands of jobs to the state’s vital Great Central Valley.
Currently Harris Farms’ horse division includes the 320-acre main farm located north of Coalinga, just east of the I-5, as well as the 200-acre part of the Harris River Ranch devoted to horses. The main farm boasts a full commercial facility, offering a wide range of services, from breeding and foaling to breaking and training, for both Harris Farms and its many loyal clients.
The pastoral Harris River Ranch, where John and Carole Harris make their home, is located 50 miles east of the main farm. The rich, sandy loam soil and underlying limestone work with ideal water conditions to nourish 200 acres of large, expansive pasture conducive to the proper growth and development of weanlings and yearlings. Cared for by our experienced River Ranch manager Laurie Brown and her staff, young horses are well prepared for the rigors of the racetrack or the sales ring. Both the main farm and the River Ranch cater especially well to young horses, together totaling 520 acres of lush, irrigated pasture that provide the ideal environments for future stars to grow and develop into sound and healthy racehorses.
President and owner John Harris entrusts his horse division to a loyal and committed group of hard-working employees. The Harris team is led by General Manager David McGlothlin and farm trainer Per Antonsen, both of whom have been with the farm since 1981. Dr. Jeanne Bowers, honored earlier this year at Santa Anita Park as a leading woman in racing, serves as the farm’s resident veterinarian. Other key members include Raul Rosas, assistant farm manager and stallion manager, and assistant trainer Lisa Torres-Antonsen. Dr. Raquel Herrero, Dr. Virginia Castillo Hernandez and Kristina Henson assist with the veterinary team. Our courteous administrative staff consists of office manager Janie Davis; Debbie Correia, administrative assistant to John Harris; accountant Monica Bazan; and receptionist Randi Camp. All are ready to field any questions or requests you may have about our operation.
Please feel free to the call the farm and schedule and appointment to tour the facilities, or visit our website at www.harrisfarms.com

Horse Division
The main Harris Farms Horse Division facility is located one mile east of Interstate 5 and 15 miles north of the Coalinga exit on I-5. This historic farm has served the California thoroughbred breeder for over 35 years. With its uniquely qualified college graduate staff of managers and assistant managers, Harris Farms has provided the states thoroughbred industry with the know how and more importantly the results to obtain the maximum benefits for your equine holdings.
With an annual conception rate hovering above 90%, the Harris Farms breeding shed (home of nine stallions) continues to lead the state in fertility and live foal rates. The staff of Harris Farms considers each and every broodmare (and their prospective foal) potentially a major contribution to the racing industry. Harris Farms breeding staff knows that an empty broodmare or a stillborn foal is costly and not in the best interest of anyone in the racing industry. Please visit our "Foal Watch section where Harris Farms leads the industry in allowing owners to view their foals on the Internet.

River Ranch

An important part of the Harris Farms horse operation is our River Ranch, located east of the main farm, about an hour's drive along a very scenic route. This 140 acre horse facility offers spacious grassy pastures along the Kings River to raise yearlings and provide for your long term turn outs.
Located at the gateway to the Sequoia National Park and blessed with a limestone soil and snow fed water from the Sierras, we have developed an excellent environment to compliment our main farm.
This unique facility provides the clear quality air, fresh mountain water, and the abundant grasses for developing a young Thoroughbred's strong skeletal frames and muscular bodies.
As your horses age, or need a good rest, the nurturing environment and caring staff of the River Ranch should be your location of choice for long term turn outs.
