JUAN BARRERA, 1981 Del Mar Derby Winner Dies
Juan Barrera (1978 Dark Bay Gelding by Big Jess-Wing Mold, by Linmold) died recently at Harris Farms’ River Ranch where he had been pensioned for the last several years. Bred and owned by John Harris’ Harris Farms, the popular gelding was trained throughout his career by Greg Gilchrist. He won 10 of 45 starts and earned $245,705. His stakes wins included the Del Mar Derby (G2), the Sutter Stakes, the Emeryville Handicap, the Pleasanton Handicap, and the Oceanside Stakes all during his 3 year old season. He has been buried at the farm’s stallion complex.
