Pedigree Profile on Compari
By Thoroughbred Time Today
by Rommy Faversham
Front-running California-bred Compari held off a tough set of challengers and
stretched his unbeaten streak to six as the four-year old Redattore (Brz)
gelding set a measured pace to take the $150,000 Budweiser Arcadia Handicap (G2)
by a half-length under Garrett Gomez on April 3 at Santa Anita Park.
Sent off as the 2-to-1 favorite in a field of seven in his graded stakes debut,
Compari covered one mile in 1:34.03 on firm turf.
His three prior stakes victories were open scores in restricted state-bred
races: the Crystal Water and Sensational Star Handicaps at Santa Anita and the
Snow Chief Stakes at Hollywood Park. The bay gelding has won six times from
seven starts and earned $422,640.
Bred in the Golden State by co-owners Harris Farms, John Nicoletti, and Donald
Valpredo, Compari is one of three winners from as many starters out of the
unraced Dixieland Band mare Southern Charm. Our subject’s stakes-winning second
dam, Fantasy Lover, is a half sister to four-time Grade 1 winner and sire Bien
Bien and dual Grade 3 winner Dr. Schwartzman. Fantasy Lover’s half sister
Winter’s Gone produced Grade 1 winners Spring At Last and Sharp Lisa as well as
Grade 2 winner Sharp Susan.
Compari hails from the second North American crop of dual hemisphere stallion
Redattore, a Group 1 winner in Brazil before being sent to Southern California
in 2001. At ages six through eight, Redattore flourished as one of the West
Coast’s top grass horses. Best at a mile to 11⁄8 miles, he captured six graded
stakes on turf, including two Grade 1 races. He also won a graded stakes on
dirt.
Redattore entered stud in 2004 and generally divided his time and duties between
Harris Farms in Coalinga, California, and Haras Sao Jose da Serra in Parana,
Brazil. One of the leading sires in Brazil during the 2008-’09 season, Redattore
has sired three Brazilian Group 1 winners, including champion miler Kapo Di
Tutti.
Earlier this year, Redattore was purchased to stand full time at Haras Old
Friends in Bage, Brazil, when the Southern Hemisphere breeding season begins in
August. The Roi Normand stallion seems to be developing a rèsumè similar to that
of his sire as both were Southern California Grade 1 winners who later went on
to become leading Brazilian sires. Roi Normand probably is best known for siring
2000 champion older mare Riboletta (Brz).
Compari is expected to make his next start on May 31 at Hollywood Park in the
Shoemaker Mile Stakes (G1), a race won by Redattore in 2003.
