Distant Victory earns shot at stakes
by Steve Anderson DRF.com
Distant Victory's third consecutive win, in a $75,940 allowance race at Del Mar
on Thursday, moved her closer to her stakes debut. The question remains, which
stakes?
On Friday, co-owner John Harris said the restricted $80,000 Adoration Handicap
over a mile on the main track or the Palomar Handicap were possibilities.
"I don't think she has to run on the grass," Harris said. "It's a good position
to be in."
Of course, if a second-condition allowance race becomes available, Distant
Victory could appear there, but such races are infrequent on a circuit lacking
depth in top-class divisions.
In Thursday's first-level allowance race, Distant Victory stalked pacesetter In
My Glory to the top of the stretch and won by three-quarters of a length, timed
for the 1 1/8 miles on turf in 1:47.68. She was ridden by Victor Espinoza for
trainer Carla Gaines.
"That worked out pretty well," Harris said in the winner's circle. "That was a
more demanding race. He gave her a confident ride."
Co-owned by Scott Gross, Distant Victory, 3, has won 3 of 4 starts and $126,540.
The winning streak includes a maiden race for statebreds at Hollywood Park in
June and an optional claimer for statebreds here on July 17.
