ARCADIA, Calif. (Dec. 26, 2008) -- Speedy California-bred Bob Black Jack led every step of the way for an impressive win in Friday’s $250,000 Grade I Malibu Stakes for 3-year-olds at Santa Anita.
Bob Black Jack is by Stormy Jack, out of the Native Prospector mare Molly’s Prospector, was bred by Gary Howard, Marlene Howard and Bruce Dunmore, was foaled at Hideaway Farms, is owned by Jeff Harmon and Tim Kasparoff and trained by James Kasparoff.
The $4,500 Barretts purchase has four wins in 10 starts, earnings of $594,925 and was coming off a fifth in the Nov. 22 Vernon Underwood, his first race since a 32-length loss in the Kentucky Derby.
"The race set up perfect for him," said jockey David Flores. "Nobody else has the speed he has. I was able to control the race from first sixteenth and he was flying the last part of the race."
"I’m kind of in fantasyland," said trainer James Kasparoff. "I’m not supposed to be running in Grade I races. He needed his last race, it was a perfect prep. I think this horse deserves a Grade 1 win. Our next immediate races are going to be short."
Bob Black Jack ran the seven furlongs in 1:20.20 and won by two lengths.
