Joe Marchese has been a long time horse-racing fan. He worked in the motion picture industry before retiring to the Valencia area. Joe is married to a cousin of Don Valpredo and started driving down to the races with Don a few years ago and people started calling him Cousin Joe. Driving down with Don as a side kick and entry to the Diamond Lane. Don always has referred to him as “Cousin Joe” so as not to confuse him with other Joe’s in the large Italian family.

Due to Joe’s enthusiasm and luck, Don and John decided to name a horse after him and picked a big son of Steinlen-Teach You, by Dimaggio that they had good hopes for. Just before the horse was to start, Joe pestered them to sell him a part of the horse and they did.

He ran a decent 4th first time out, but then had to be sent back to the farm due to some soundness issues. The 2 Cousin Joes are shown here in June 2005 when they visited at the farm. Cousin Joe the horse has now won his last 2 races at Hollywood Park including an impressive allowance win on July 15th and has earned over $90,000.
